NEAAAT’s Teacher of the Year for 2018-19

Shala Spence has 11 years of experience in education. She began her education career as a middle school science teacher and is currently a high school instructional coach at Northeast Academy for Aerospace & Advanced Technologies. She is a graduate of Elizabeth City State University, with a bachelor’s degree in Biology, and earned a master’s degree in Education from Gardner-Webb University. At NEAAAT, she teaches advanced careers courses, is the co-founder and director of MetaLab Enrichment Collaborative, a trained teacher mentor, senior Beta Club advisor, and the 2018-2019 Teacher of the Year. She has been a presenter at several education conferences, including the NC Middle School Conference and the Bridging the Gap Conference. She is also a Google Certified Educator, a CodeHS Certified Educator, and holds state certifications in Science (grades 6-9) & Technology Education (grades 6-12). Shala is elated to be working at NEAAAT and strives to create a direct positive impact on young women and men to empower them to meaningfully impact the world.
